The Algae pilot

05.02.2021

The Algae pilot is a research facility run by Norce / university of Bergen. The aim at the pilot is to find ways of producing useful algaes as cheap and with as little resources as possible.

It is located just next to the Carbon capture centre at the Mongstad Oil refinery. This makes it possible to use capured CO2 as an input for the algae. The Carbon capture centre also has plentiful of clean, cold saltwater the Algae pilot needs.

After removing most of the water using centrifuges and filtration, they get a green slurry.

After drying the slurry, they get the final product: algae powder

Dorinde Kleinegris show the pupils how algae look like in the microskope.

Outside the greenhouse, which was emty at the moment. After each batch of algae, they had to clean it thoroughly to avoid that the small amount of algae from the previous batch could contaiminate the new one.

Dorintes brought with her some products where algae was part of the ingridients. Blue colour in food was from a blue-green algae, Spirulina was often used as a nutritional supplement. The shoe was made of plastic m, made from unwanted algaes in ponds and rivers
